Prison Inmate Suing Taco Bell over Doritos Taco Idea
An inmate at a Florence, Colorado prison has filed a lawsuit against Taco Bell, Pepsi, Frito Lay, and parent company Yum Brands, claiming the idea for the popular Doritos Locos taco was stolen from him.
The Doritos Locos taco, which forgoes the traditional corn or flower tortilla in lieu of one fashioned from Doritos chips, has become wildly popular, with more than half a billion tacos sold in the year since its release.
The inmate, who will be representing himself in court, claims that his idea for the taco dates back as far as 2006 and can be found in a notarized document he sent to his attorney during that year. The lawsuit alleges that someone stole his idea from this document and demands details on the Doritos Locos Taco’s inception from Taco Bell under the Freedom of Information Act.
If the man is able to prove in court that his idea was stolen, he will be entitled to a significant amount of money due to the company’s high revenue from these tacos.
